This project was an attempt to combine the essentials of wilderness and remote first aid in the format of a bicycle tour!

The objective was to learn practical skills, and develop personal and group strategies for imminent human migrations. This included certifying participants in the American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric CPR + AED, First Aid For Severe Trauma (FAST), Naloxone Administration & Wilderness and Remote First Aid certifications.

We initially had eight participants sign up, but then all but two had to reschedule. We decided to pivot and utilize this opportunity for more program research.

While encountering flash floods and 100 degree heat, we discovered that the key lies in staggering riding days with the learning – to see the landscape, and allow enough time for information gathering / processing. After our scheduled mileage, the energy to then learn a medical curriculum was extremely minimal.

Objectively, this trip was a success, although our original expectations were not met. We spent much needed time refining our route, our relationships with small businesses and the land, and modifying our curriculum. Enoch is working with AdventureMed to offer hybrid WFA/WFR curriculum, offsetting the educational workload out in the field. By having the students take responsibility for a portion of their education before the trip, it aligns the group more efficiently than before.
